WELCOME TO GAYSIDE

History of Gayside:

In 1985, residents of Gayside, Newfoundland, voted to re-name their hometown, "Baytona, NL", after enduring increased harassment. Was this an effort to distance the small town from any association to gay culture, especially in light of a new, terrifying AIDS epidemic? Inspired by this tale, and mindful of the climate of social prejudice in heat of the 1980s AIDS crisis, collaborative queer art trio, The Third Leg, present their interpretation and re-appropriation of "Gayside", the once feared place-name. The month-long exhibition explores both actual and fictitious histories and examines the artists' personal experiences of growing-up gay in both rural and metropolitan locations.

Art Exhibition and Dance Party

Come out and join us on the gay side for a Dance Party at 10pm under the canopy of campy decorations, hand-sewn banners, Gay Pride memorabilia and dioramic miniatures. Take home free condoms, and artist multiples such as souvenir buttons, a copy of The Third Leg's second limited edition, silk-screen-printed zine, and their hilarious illustrated toponomy map of the re-invented, imaginary island called Gayside. Witness how WELCOME TO GAYSIDE is testimony to the ability of art to transcend discrimination and illuminate complex issues such as societal and internalized homophobia.

"WELCOME TO GAYSIDE" Video Screening

Saturday, September 16th, 2006, 8pm
The Third Leg is pleased to present a screening of short films and videos that has been put together in collaboration with Toronto-based artist Paige Gratland. The program will feature work by the following Canadian and US artists as they respond to the AIDS crisis, homophobia, and explore queer identity through film and video. We would like to thank the V-tape (Toronto), the artists and Eastern Edge for making this screening possible.
