Everyday Eroticism
Grant Boland
Jennifer Pohl
Dates Showing: October 8th - November 8th, 1999
Jennifer Pohl and Grant Boland are two painters who work and live in St. John's. 'Everyday Eroticism' will be the first in a series of joint shows that the two are endeavoring. They explore eroticism through the paint, both implicit and explicit. There is a strong comparability of styles through light and painterly vision, however, it is the eye that reveals the nature of the gaze. Differences in the work will unveil both individual and possible sociological implications in which male and female see and record image. Inquiring into the nature of the gendered gaze, the paintings will be placed within a larger sociological, political and historical context to further illuminate and clarify their significance. However, ultimately the imagery in 'Everyday Eroticism' that surfaces is homorous and provocative, questioning the very notion of what is erotic.
