Curator: Gabrielle Kem
Dates Showing: May 17th - June 28th, 1998

This exhibition featured work that presented the image of the sailor as a dual icon in contemporary culture, as an icon in the cult of the past and as an icon in the gay community. In bringing these four artists together, the exhibition aimed to explore changing perceptions of masculinity in Newfoundland culture from the nineteenth century into the twentieth. Mark Vaughan-Jackson from the Evening Telegram interviewed curator Gabrielle Kemp for this exhibition. The opening reception was held May 17, and was followed by a party at the Outpost, hosted by D. J. Bluefish. This project was developed with the financial assistance of the Strategic Initiatives Office at the Canada Council for the Arts.
