Natural History
Renee Duval
Gerald Vaandering
Dates Showing: January 11th - February 15th, 1998

Through painting, Montreal artist Renee Duval explores the scientific discipline of natural history and the theosophical principles that underlay science in the Romantic era. Primates, the final installment in her Taxonomy series will be exhibited alongside work by London, Ontario artist Gerald Vaandering. Vaandering superimposes pictographs over photographs of the urban, corporate warrior of the late twentieth century. Through these works, he explores the notion that our economy no longer serves us, but that we serve our economy. The comparison between the ancient warrior and the corporate warrior forces us to evaluate our place in natural history and to consider contemporary values as for Vaandering, we are all still hunting and gathering. Gerald Vaandering was interviewed by Gloria Hickey for CBC Radio, and this was broadcasted on January 14, 1998. An opening reception for the exhibiiton was held on January 11 and both artists were in attendance.
